Native. Dainty deep green small leaves that quickly form a low mat of tight foliage. In spring and summer myriads of starry shaped white flowers dance above the foliage, followed by fleshy purple berries. Plant in sun or part shade in well drained soil that does not completely dry out in summer. Evergreen.

Native- Miro. A tall growing forest tree with narrow dark green feathery foliage. The bark is grey-brown to black and falls off in large flakes. Produces large reddish-purple plum like fruit loved by the Kereru and Tuis. Plant in a semi-shaded spot in humus rich soil. Hardy. Evergreen.

The red berries are quite large and smell of turpentine and while they are loved by birds they should not be eaten by humans.

Commonly called Horopito or Pepperwood. Easy to grow and has striking red blushed, aromatic foliage. Little green fragrant, star flowers appear in spring but these do not compete with the foliage. Plant in sun or semi-shade in nice deep soil for best results. Hardy and evergreen.

Can grow to 1.5m or more after 10 years, depending on growing environment.

A beautiful, slow growing, large tree with distinctive buttresses at the trunk base. The toothed foliage is round and glossy green. An excellent tree for growing in swampy areas and low lying gullies in forest and in the West Coastal in the South Island. NZ Native. Evergreen.

They do best in wetter sites on edges of streams or lakes. Can be a good for stabilizing banks because of its shallow root system.
